Whole Foods has created a Premium Body Care Quality Standard for personal care products. The purpose of the standard is to identify natural products sold in their stores. This is a link to their pdf Unacceptable Ingredients for Premium Body Care. We use this list as a reference when developing formulas to identify ingredients that warrant concern or further research. If we feel the research justifies their exclusion from our products we won't use them.

It should be noted that all organic (chemical) active ingredients approved by the FDA are on the unacceptable list as they are not "natural." We feel that the organic actives we use are safe for people and the environment. Until further progress has been made with ease of application issues associated with inorganic (physical block) actives, we feel there is a place for organic actives in sunscreens.
