SUN SCREEN PROTECTION FACTS
SPF RATING SYSTEM SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, is a 40+ year old designation that ONLY measures the UVB protection, the rays that BURN your skin. The SPF rating is calculated by comparing the amount of time needed to produce a sunburn on protected skin to the amount of time needed to cause a sunburn on unprotected skin. For example, a fair-skinned person who would normally turn red after 10 minutes in the sun. Ten minutes is their "initial burning time." If that person uses a sunscreen with SPF 15, it multiplies the initial burning time by 15, so it takes 150 minutes, or 2 and half hours, for that person's skin to turn red. If that same person uses a SPF 30 sunscreen, it multiplies the initial burning time by 30, so it takes 300 minutes, or 5 hours for that person's skin to turn red. Remember, if you go swimming, perspire heavily, towel off briskly, or similar, you can lose some or all of your protection, so remember to RE-APPLY Sunscreen often while enjoying the outdoors. A single application in the morning is great, but not the complete answer to full sun protection. There is no such thing as an "all-day protection" sunscreen. They all need to be reapplied throughout the day, more if you are involved in various activities. In practice, the protection from a particular sunscreen depends on factors such as:
Owing to consumer confusion over the real degree and duration of protection offered, labeling restrictions are in force in several countries. Unfortunately, the USA does not have mandatory, comprehensive sunscreen standards, even though a draft rule has been under development since 1978! In the 2007 draft rule, the FDA proposed to institute the labeling of SPF 50+ for sunscreens offering more protection. This and other measures were proposed to limit unrealistic claims about the level of protection offered (such as "all day protection"), . In the EU sunscreens are limited to SPF 50+, and Australia's upper limit is 30. As you can easily see from the SPF Chart, SPF 30 covers 97% of UVB rays, and going up to a SPF 50 only gives you 2% more coverage, and that is ONLY if it is applied properly, and re-applied often enough, and again only for UVB rays. Your best defense again sun damage is to stay out of the sun! The other is to use a SPF 15 or 30 that has "Broad Spectrum UVB & UVA Coverage" and ensure that you re-apply often as needed, while continuing to use basic and common sense Sun Safety Measures. UVA AND UVB INFORMATION The Sun radiates UVA and UVB rays (and harmless UVC rays) to the earth and when these rays reach the skin, they cause skin damage. More than 90% of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure! UV Rays, a known carcinogen, is made up of 3 types of Radiation - UVA, UVB, and UVC. Only UVA and UVB have been linked to skin cancer and can weaken the immune system. UVC rays are typically blocked by the ozone layer and are generally of no concern to humans except at very high altitudes.
